Happy New Year!! Today is the first service of 2017. Our theme for this year is "The Building Year". For the month of January we want to start with the building of our home.
The home is the bedrock of civilization. Our homes can almost be a "suburb " of heaven. Husbands, wives, fathers, mothers and children all have their parts in making a house into a home. God has a will about everything concerning our lives, especially our homes.
Think of some of the purposes that God gives for the home. The home should be a place of service and labor. Everyone should have their part in taking care of the home. There is as much Christianity as washing the dishes as there is singing in the choir. If you're a Christain, there's as much old time religion in keeping a nice house as there is doing personal work. Life is not divided into the secular and spiritual, but everything in life is sacred for a Christain. All ground is holy ground, every bush is a burning bush and every place is a temple to worship God.
The home is also a place of recreation. Is your home attractive? A happy place? The laughter of your children can be the sweetest sound to fill your home.
The home is a place of safety. The security of all of us should be wrapped up in the word home. No matter what the day brings, if we have a home and a place of safety, we can relish the time we walk in the front door of our place of security.
Finally the home should be a place of prayer. You can not have a Christain home without having a place of prayer and things of Christ. The Bible should have a place of reverence in our home. Spend time on your family altar in prayer with the Lord.
The word home is a sweet word. Place in your mind and heart the importance of this institution that God has given us. It's time for us to stop and think about our home. What is it like? Is it a happy place? A place of security ? A place of worship? As believers we talk about heaven being our eternal home. If our home is the way it ought to be here on this earth, then it can be like a 'suburb' of that , it's a wonderful thing, almost like heaven!
“When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence.”
