Throughout the month of November, our church will be emphasizing stewardship. You will have Sunday School lessons, guest speakers, sermons, and literature given to you related to the topic of giving.

The conservative, fundamental interpretation of scripture teaches that our God owns all things. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness therof (Psalms 24:1). Tithing is a confirmation of God's controlling ownership. "The tithe is the Lord's (Leviticus 27:30) The surrender of the tithe is symbolic of the consecration of the whole. How a person gives to the Lord is not an issue related to salvation. Real students of the scriptures never teach tithing as a requirement for salvation either from the Old Testament or the New Testament. Our God is systematic and orderly and wishes us to have a plan of giving that comes from a heart of purpose (II Corinthians 9:7). Although there are no limits of scriptural giving, the first standard mentioned in the Bible is the tithe in Genesis 14 and either by precept or principle, it permeates the whole of the scriptures.

The local church is God's agency for spiritual activity in the age of grace. Therefore, it would follow that the church is the storehouse for reception of the tithes and appropriate special offerings of God's people.

The above stated principles have been the position, not only of the Fairview Baptist Church and your pastor for all these years, but the position of conservative, fundamental Christians throughout church history. The basic reasons to give our tithes and offerings through the local church are:

  • To honor the Lord                               (Proverbs 3:9-10)
  • To care for the needs of His house     (Malachi 3:6)
  • To cause increase for His people        (Proverbs 11:24-25)
  • To provide for the saints                     (I Cor. 16:1-2)

We have a tremendous opportunity to invest for eternity. Begin today!
